It dates from around 1910. Until the 1950s it stood on the RN 150 less than 1 mile (1.3km) from the centre of La Villedieu. La Villedieu is a village (more correctly commune) in Poitou-Charentes. It has a population of around 200. 17470 and details and images are easy to find via Google. The web address at the foot of this listing will take you to the vicinity in which this marker stood - maybe its replacement or to another on the opposite side of the road. The road designation and all the distances to neighbouring larger towns, in both directions, are accurate.
The major road on which it stood also shows on maps as the N150 or RN150 and, like so many other trunk roads in France, has more recently been redesignated D950 where the regional authorities have been given responsibility for its maintenance. I was informed by the vendor that this part of the highway had been reconstructed in the 1950s. This marker was not put back. A villager obtained it from the constructors/site and it had remained in their barn for almost 60 years.
Although that provenance cannot possibly be verified, the sign is entirely genuine, is Michelin pattern c1910 and has not been repainted for decades - otherwise it would have a much more glossy finish and the detailed distances would have been painted over as trying to read them at modern speeds is dangerous.
