This Set of Signed Antique (late 1890s to early 1900s) French Limoges 10 Fish Plates & Large Fish Serving Platter by G. Is in exceptionally nice condition. As per the Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain (Mary Frank Gaston), the following backstamps (Photo #6) found on all of the pieces indicate that the porcelain was made in the late 1890s or early 1900s.
& Cie initials in green and the over-glaze A & D initials in red. All pieces also carry the impressed T H initials (separated with the Legion of Honor Symbol) indicating that the pieces came from a Theodore Haviland factory. The backstamps, impressions, & artist signature indicate quality porcelain with quality decorations. Each piece features a superb hand painted portrayal of a lovely underwater scene with a differing fish swimming in a lush pond. Each piece is signed by the artist, Karl (Photo #10). An attractive outside border is painted in gold & pink and features a thin outer gold trim line with gold accents leaves & dots. The underwater fish portrayals feature soft pastel hues of green and pink with some yellow and blue.
The individual fish are realistic and highly detailed. There is some minor normal wear on the outside thin gold trim line of the plates and one plate has a single tiny surface mark on the border (Photo #5), otherwise, the plates are truly in beautiful condition with NO nicks, chips, cracks, crazing, or repairs. Each plate is approximately 8 ½ in diameter x 1 tall. There are 5 plates where the fish is to the left of the pink vegetation and 5 plates where the fish is to the right of the pink vegetation. The large fish serving platter is a very attractive piece that measures 23 ¼ long x 9 ¼ wide x 1 5/8 tall with 2 pink & gold handles it also has an additional thin gold trim line on the base.
The tray is a beautiful accessory for the plates, however, it does have a few minor flaws including the following. There is some minor normal wear to the outside of the upper thin gold trim line, there is a small yellowish surface mark (or errant brush stoke) between the fishs nose and the left handle (Photo #9) and there is a small nick & a hair-line crack on the right handle the crack is visible on the surface and on the bottom (Photos# 11 & 12). On the surface, the hair-line crack is not easily noticed and cannot be felt. The hair-line crack on the backside is out-of-sight on the bottom, can be felt with a passing finger, and appears to have been professionally treated to prevent further spread. Even with these flaws, the large serving platter makes a great accessory piece for the fish plates.
