Signed PAUL SORMANI French Inlaid Kidney Shaped Chest / Table c. Elegant inlaid kidney shaped chest on tapered legs by Paul Sormani (1817 - 1877). Made during the last decade of his life, after he had moved to the Rue Charlot in 1867 - which dates this piece from 1867 - 77. Sormani fought against the lower quality products that the industrial revolution was making widely available, and won several medals at international exhibitions, as well as the patronage of the Empress Eugenie. This piece shows his deft use of exotic veneers and inlay. The top drawer is false, the lower three open easily; the second has the Sormani brass plaque. Structurally without issue - and a heavy piece for its size. The piece has been professionally restored at some point, and has a newer French polish.
The top is excellent, as are the drawer fronts and sides. The back is excellent as well but has a minor vertical veneer split to the right of the left leg.
It's not structural and normal for these pieces. It does not affect the integrity of the leg. The legs have minimal wear. Measures 29 3/4" tall with a width of 23" on the top and a depth of 11 3/4.The item will be hand delivered directly to your residence or business.
