The jar is hand painted with colorful flowers, a lovely green accent color and gold trim. The piece is signed on the bottom by artist P. Richebois and marked Apothecaire a Nevers (Apothecary in Nevers).Nevers, France is famous for their 1600's to 1800's hand painted earthen wares, pottery, majolica, etc. Nevers, France is also renowned as the burial place of Saint Bernadette. The apothecary jar has a hand painted label "ERYNGIUM CAMPESTRE" surrounded by flowers and a bow.
It features a lid with painted flowers, a green accent ring and a gold finial top. ERYNGIUM CAMPESTRE is Field Eryngo or Watling Street Thistle which is used as an infusion to treat coughs, urinary infections and whooping cough.
The jar measures approximately 10.5" tall x 4.5" in diameter. The jar is in very good condition.The painted flowers and green trim rings are very colorful and clear. There is some gold trim that has been rubbed off in places on the lid and base. This is a fantastic addition to your antique pharmacy apothecary collection.
